I’m extremely sensitive to odors. So walking through a field of flowers (ok, I don’t remember the last time I walked through a field of flowers, but a girl can dream, right?) is that much sweeter to me. Unfortunately, all the not-so-sweet scents of our world such as the trash, the guy in the next apartment attempting to “cook” (if you can even call it that), my lovely puppy having a not so lovely accident, or hanging out with my brother right after he decided it would be funny to pour a bottle of cologne over his head. Even traveling can be a nightmare when you’re allergic to smoke and have to take the last room available, and of course it’s a smoking room. The list goes on and on! It makes me nauseous even thinking about these heinous odors.
For me, things like perfumes, candles, diffusers and anything else scented brings a much needed impression of serenity and tranquility. And best of all, they enable me to have signature, familiar scents that bring comfort in their familiarity. Scents are also scientifically proven as one of the biggest memory triggers, which means they do play an important role in our lives if you recognize it or not. So for me, I’d prefer to remember college by my favorite perfume at the time (Flowerbomb by Viktor and Rolf) rather than my roommates and I having a war over them refusing to take the trash out…ever!
It’s hard to live in tranquility when there’s a foul odor in the air.
