Birdcage Veils

One of the ultimate wedding accessories is the veil. While some brides opt for the traditional, long white veils with blushers to cover their faces, more and more brides are sporting vintage-inspired birdcage veils.

Birdcage veils come in a bunch of shapes and sizes in varying fabrics with a plethora of accents, but the basic idea is the same – a small piece of netting that tucks into your hair and covers your eyes (and sometimes your nose and mouth). They are flirtatious and glamorous, not to mention completely charming.

If you’re thinking about wearing one on your big day, consider your overall style and envision a piece that complements it. Would your veil be something simple, clean and classic, such as just netting and a hair comb? Or do you want something truly vintage with rhinestones, feathers and flair? You can achieve either look by working with some netting or tulle and adding embellishments of your choice.

The veils themselves are often made of French Net or tulle. The first is made up of large-hole netting, with two and one-half holes per inch forming diamond shapes and intersecting squares. The second is a much finer weave, with tiny, hexagonal holes. Both fabrics hold their shapes, making them perfect for framing your face without getting in your way as you walk down the aisle or twirl around the dance floor!

As you’ll see them topping many a lovely bride’s head, these veils are often accompanied by additional accessories like floral or feather clips or bejeweled barrettes. No matter what your style, you can find something that is very “you”.
