Who doesn’t love a stay in a luxury hotel? Everything in the room is designed specifically to invite you in and help you relax. They are places of escape for each of us. Think of the tones you typically encounter – mellow and soothing. Layers of texture are finished with a level of softness that beckons you to stay in bed and order room service. Everything looks perfectly in place and meticulously chosen to make you feel comfortable. So well chosen, in fact, that it looks effortless.

However, you can be sure that plenty of effort goes into determining a hotel room’s color palette, layout and furnishings. Experienced designers are paid very well to create an experience that reflects the hotel’s vision and leaves guests yearning for their next visit.

I recently stayed at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. It was a great experience and the hotel room was one of the highlights. From the textured wallpaper to the marble bath, it evoked a sense of luxury and tranquility I wanted to take home with me. I wanted to live this look every day… but where to start?

Fortunately, it is not difficult to recreate a luxurious, serene space such as this one. You don’t have to spend a fortune on custom furniture. As the rule goes, splurge on an item or two – even better if it is one of your anchor pieces, such as your bedding or artwork – and find affordable, stylish pieces to complete your look.

Choose your color palette and experiment with textures and patterns.  What colors make you feel relaxed? Or perhaps your idea of a luxury hotel escape is something more colorful and vibrant. Notice how layering textures adds richness. For instance, your bedding may be smooth cotton, so use accent pillows in various materials and prints. Add an area rug with a chunky weave and curtains in woven linen.

Upholstered furniture evokes a rich, custom feel. You can find it in retail stores or online at a fraction of the cost. Furniture that has special details that set them apart will make your space look unique. You can easily change certain elements such as hardware for a custom look or to dress up existing furniture.

Organization is a key element to a luxurious hotel room. Clutter will quickly detract from any sense of calm, so be sure you have plenty of storage to contain all of your belongings. Making a habit of putting away each item when not in use will go a long way towards creating a room you can enjoy.

Your choices should ultimately reflect a style you feel drawn to and comfortable in. Use this same principle throughout the space to create a haven for you to enjoy every day.
