Pin Curls

A guide to creating the classic hairstyle

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved watching classic Old Hollywood movies. I often find myself admiring the glamorous actresses, and one thing particularly stands out to me is their hair; their perfectly coiffed curls managed to look both elegant and alluring at the same time. 1940s actress Veronica Lake is seemingly remembered more for her hairstyle than her body of work, and what a beautiful hairstyle it was! Channel your inner classic bombshell with this guide to creating pin-curls.

  • Start with hair that is slightly damp. Hair that is soaking wet, especially if your hair is thick, will take forever to dry when pinned up.
  • Apply a curl enhancing product all over your hair, and part your hair in your desired position.
  • Wrap small sections of hair around two fingers. Start at the ends and twirl all the way up to your roots.
  • Use bobby pins to pin each curl to your head. If the curls don’t feel secure, use two bobby pins on each section applied in a criss-cross pattern for extra hold.
  • Once you’ve finished curling, wait for your hair to dry. Do not use hairspray at this point. It will make the curls hard to take down. If you are going to sleep wrap a scarf around your hair to prevent frizz.
  • Take the curls down when your hair is completely dry.  Gently brush out the curls, and then adjust them into place with your fingers.
  • If any curls are over brushed or too loose you can touch up with a small barreled curling iron.
  • Once all the curls are in place, set them with hairspray.

If you’re short on time, you can get a similar look using a set of hot sticks (long bendable rollers) or a ¾ inch barrel curling iron on dry hair. If you use a curling iron, pin the sections up with bobby pins just like you would after curling hair around your fingers.

If you are new to pin curls, it may take a couple practice runs to master the look, so don’t be discouraged if it isn’t perfect on your first try. Depending on your hair’s texture, it may take a lot of brushing and adjusting to very little if you have fine hair that doesn’t hold a curl well.

Try this look with neutral eye-makeup and a bright red lip for an extra dose of classic, Old Hollywood glam!
